CHLOE is a graphic novel I completed back in 2000. It won the Xeric Award in September 2001.Although not a "breakthrough success" by any stretch of the imagination, the book did generate some positive criticism and perplexity among many readers. (Those who are too impatient for the entirety of the book to be uploaded are urged to buy their very own copy from HERE!) I have many mixed feelings when I look at CHLOE today. Although the artwork suffers from crudity and flaws, I feel that I knew more about drawing than I do today. I had a much freer and more fluid approach at the time. I do wish I could have curtailed the excessive, flat cross-hatching. It does improve, somewhat, towards the end. CHLOE is, for me, a rather personal story. Although it is not autobiographical, it does contain much that correlates with my own experiences. Many readers comment on its strangeness and lack of "plot." This attitude perplexes me, since so much of what I draw and write about is a direct regurgitation of reality as I have attempted to digest. Perhaps we can all chalk it up to my status as subversive weirdo and pervert. Nonetheless, please try to enjoy this offering as best you can. I really did give it my best shot. If it fails to hit the mark, the fault is mine, not thine. |
